CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi men's basketball team will host one of the biggest contests
in school history, when in-state rival Texas A&M visits the
American Bank Center on Monday, Nov. 15, for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff.
The game will be televised live on Southland TV and nationwide on
ESPN Full Court.
The contest will mark the second meeting in the history of the
two schools, as the Islanders knocked off the Aggies in one of the
biggest upsets in the history of the program with an 82-80 win in
College Station on Dec. 13, 2003. It is the first time that Texas
A&M has visited Corpus Christi in school history.
The Islanders and Aggies both won their season openers, as the
Islanders knocked off Northeastern (Okla.) State, 81-74, on
Saturday as five players finished in double figures. The Aggies
took their opener on Friday, as they demolished Alcorn State 88-56.
Nathan Walkup led the way with 22 points in that game to lead Texas
A&M to the victory.
THE LAST TIME
In the only previous meeting between the Islanders and Aggies,
the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi faithful had plenty of reason to
cheer, as the Islanders stunned the Aggies 82-80 in College Station
in 2003.
Brian Evans and Travis Bailey provided the 1-2 punch for the
visitors in that contest, as Evans netted 21 points on 7-for-10
shooting, and Bailey added 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting,
including a 4-for-7 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Corey
Lamkin added eight points and 10 defensive rebounds in the win.
The Islanders survived a late surge by the home Aggies, as
Texas A&M trimmed a 13-point deficit to just two points before
time ran out in the comeback. Andy Slocum had a double-double with
10 points and 13 boards in a losing effort.
AGAINST THE BIG XII
Monday's contest against the Aggies will mark the
first of four games this season against Big XII opponents for the
Island University. On Wednesday, the Islanders head to Stillwater,
Okla., to face Oklahoma State in addition to road contests at
Kansas (Nov. 23) and at Texas Tech (Jan. 2).
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 3-15 all-time against foes
from the Big XII, including the win over A&M, a 1-2 mark
against Texas Tech and an 0-6 record vs. Oklahoma State.
CLOSING IN ON 1,000
Senior Justin Reynolds is on the verge of entering an
elite club for the Islanders. The native of Pearland, Texas, has
scored 917 points in his career, the eighth-most in school history.
He is just 83 points away from becoming the seventh player to don
the Islanders uniform to make it past the 1,000-point marker. Chris
Daniels is the school record holder, with 1,407 points fron
2004-08.
Teammate Demond Watt is also on pace to top the 1,000-point
plateau this season, with 821 in his time on the team. Watt has 99
career blocks, second in school history, and is third with his 583
rebounds over three-plus seasons.
