The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program is
teaming up with First Friday for the annual Women's Basketball
Coach Association (WBCA) Pink Zone game on Feb. 3 against UT
Arlington at the American Bank Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
on the Wednesday night.
The game will be part of the WBCA's effort to raise awareness
for breast cancer around the nation. Fifty percent of all proceeds
from the sale of group tickets will be donated to the First Friday
organization, a local breast cancer group founded in 1994 that
helps women in need by providing free mammograms in the Coastal
Bend area.
"Our organizational mission is to honor those who have breast
cancer, promote early detection through educational programs and
provide screening mammograms to women in need," said First Friday
representative Cindy Eckman. "We are excited to join forces with
TAMUCC to assist us in our goal of providing as many screening
mammograms each year as the women who need them with the ultimate
goal being to save lives.
"We feel so honored that these young women will bring our
mission of early detection not only to their peers, but our entire
community. Early detection is the name of the game!"
Corporate partner AEP Texas will be the game sponsor, teaming up
with the Islanders and First Friday to help raise both money and
awareness for breast cancer research and early detection.
"We're very excited about partnering with the Islanders and
First Friday for this cause," said AEP Texas COO and President
Pablo Vegas. "Beating breast cancer is going to require a team
effort, from local communities, corporate partners, and the medical
community; our very own Islanders game is a great illustration of
that fact."
The Islanders Athletic Department is proud to a part of such an
important cause in the Corpus Christi community and has continued
to get behind the efforts of the WBCA and First Friday.
"The Islanders and the women's basketball team are excited to be
joining AEP Texas in sponsoring this game to promote awareness of
breast cancer," said Islander golf coach and Senior Women's
Administrator Carol Blackmar. "I believe most people and families
have been touched by this disease and it is my hope that the battle
against breast cancer will be won. We hope to see the community's
support for this cause at the basketball game."
Fans are encouraged to come out to the game, wear pink and be a
part of a great cause while cheering on the Islander women's
basketball team.
