Lubbock - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
continued to add to their list of team members who qualified to the
conference meet next month in Norman. The Islanders added nine more
from its roster that will compete at the indoor championships.
In the women's triple jump both junior
Kassandrea Son and Tyesha McFarlin qualified after both finished in
the top 15 of the event. Son was third with a mark of 38-07.00,
McFarlin was 12th leaping 35-05.75.
Son, also competed in the 55-meters dash in
which she qualified with a time of 6.95 seconds.
TAMUCC saw three runners on the women's side
qualify with a pair of freshman BreAnna Briggs and Melissa Jones in
the one mile run and junior Courtney Johnson in the 3000-meters.
Briggs was 13th in the mile at 5:18.34 just behind here
was Jones at 5:25.56.
Johnson came in fifth during the 3000-meters
finishing in 10:41.54. Also competing today but didn't qualify were
two freshman in the 55-meters hurdles Macy Osburn who was
30th at 9:06 second and Jasmine Oyewumi finishing 46th
10.72 seconds.
Islander men had freshman Patrick Kimeli and
junior Ari Perez qualify in the mile also with both coming in the
top 15 of the event. Kimeli was ninth at 4:21.6 and Perez 4:23.72.
Missing qualifying were freshman Curtis Patton at 4:31.52 in
22nd, senior Kirk Dalheim in 29th 4:36.43 and
sophomore Paul Keter in 36th at 4:41.80.
Ozzie Garcia was the TAMUCC star of the day
qualifying in two different events, 55-meter hurdles and triple
jump. Garcia in the 55-meter prelims was 12th but in the
finals finished 9th with a time of 7.77 seconds. In the
triple jump he was 15th was a mark of 45.10.00.
Finally in the men's 3000-meter run Daniel
Barlow finished in 10th place with a time of
9:11.43.
"We're continuing to make progress but I feel
like we are moving in the right direction at this point," said
director of track and field Shawn Flanagan.
A&M-Corpus Christi will be off next
weekend before competing Feb. 6 at the Houston Open.
