A pair of college basketball preview magazines have named
recognized three Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball
players amongst the tops in the Southland Conference.
In the Lindy's College
Basketball preview magazine, senior Kevin Palmer is the
magazine's choice for the top player in the Southland Conference.
Palmer, a 6-6 guard/forward, led the Southland Conference in
scoring a season ago with 18.2 points a game (19.2 in Southland
Conference action), which was the highest average by an Islander
since Michael Hicks. He was 11th in the nation with 2.6 steals a
contest. The versatile Palmer was second on the team with 5.2
rebounds.
Junior forward Demond Watt was also recognized in the Lindy's
publication being named to preseason All-Southland Conference
second team. The 6-7 Watt led the Islanders with 6.4 rebounds per
game a season ago and was tied for second on the team in scoring
with 8.2 points a contest.
In the Blue Ribbon
College Basketball Yearbook, Islander sophomore Terence
Jones was named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year.
Jones, who practiced with the team a season ago but did not play,
averaged 11.2 points a game in his senior season at Notre Dame
Prep.
In both magazines, the Islanders were again predicted to compete
for the top spot in the Southland Conference West Division as they
were voted to finish second in each. In the West Division, Sam
Houston State received the early nod in both, while Nicholls and
Southeastern Louisiana split top honors in the East Division.
A&M-Corpus Christi is scheduled to open the season at the
Duel in the Desert hosted by Texas Tech beginning Nov. 13. They
open against Oregon State and will also face the Red Raiders and
South Dakota in the round-robin event.
