The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team heads to the
Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Mo. for its second
tournament of the fall. The three-round tournament begins on Monday
with 36 holes on the par-72 Rivercut Golf Club with the final 18 on
Tuesday.
The tournament is the second of the season for the Islanders,
who opened at the "Mo" Morial Tournament at Texas A&M just over
a week ago. Rain shortened the three-round tournament to 18 holes
with A&M-Corpus Christi finishing ninth. Ashley Watkins led the
Islanders in the opener with a 5-over 77.
Islander head coach Carol Blackmar is looking at the tournament
as a fresh beginning.
"We got off the plane yesterday and it was raining again, so
hopefully the tournament won't be a continuation in that sense,"
said Blackmar. "We struggled with our short game in the first
tournament. It doesn't matter how well you hit the ball if you
don't have a short game. We threw away to many shots in the first
tournament so we've worked on that quite a bit since."
The Islander women will compete in two more events before
concluding the fall. They head to Sam Houston State for a
tournament Oct. 12-13 before closing out the fall in Florida at the
Pat Bradley Invitational in Fort Myers.
