NORMAN, Okla. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf
team climbed two spots to eighth on the final day of the Susie
Maxwell Berning Classic Monday as it carded the second-best score
of the round with a 313.
After having
just one player break 80 in the first two rounds, three Islanders
had rounds of 79-or-better in the final round. Ashley Watkins and
Melissa Fahey each shot 77s on the final day. Watkins, who had a
second round mark of 78, finished 16th as an individual to lead the
Islanders with a 54-hole score of 238. Ashley Olynick had her best
round of the tournament on the final day with a 79 to tie for 27th
with a 242. Courtney Peeler finished in a tie for 38th with a
54-hole mark of 247.
The Islanders'
313 was the second lowest round of the morning behind only Baylor's
306. A&M-Corpus Christi climbed two spots to eighth with a 974
finishing three shots behind Redlands Community College, who had a
971. A&M-Corpus Christi was six shots behind Texas-El Paso for
sixth.
Baylor used the
306 to claim the team title with a 942 finishing three shots ahead
of host Oklahoma. The Sooners' Kendall Dye won the individual crown
with a 225 edging her teammate Ellen Mueller by four shots.
The event was
the final regular season tournament of the spring for the
Islanders. They will compete in two weeks at the Southland
Conference Championship in Lake Charles, La.
