The Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi softball program added power and speed after
signing Junior College All-American Kacie Smith to a national
letter of intent on Wednesday.
Smith, a
sophomore at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz., has been a key
component to the success of her current team. The Yavapai Rough
Riders are currently #1 in the NJCAA rankings.
"Kacie adds to
our impressive list of transfer signings this year," said head
coach Jake Schumann. "She is the ultimate 'gamer' with outstanding
defensive capabilities at 3B and some pop in her bat."
Smith currently
is hitting .423 as sophomore with nine homeruns, 13 doubles, 56 RBI
and a perfect 20-for-20 in stolen base attempts. Smith is
54-for-55 in her two-year career in stolen bases. Her freshman
year, she hit .414 with 67 RBI and 69 runs scored. For her
production in her rookie year, Smith was awarded the honor of
All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference and 1st Team
National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American in
2007-08
"Kacie brings
that win at all costs attitude, much like our other signings this
year," said Schumann. "She is definitely part of the culture change
that is taking place on the Island for the 2009-2010
season."
Smith chose the
Islanders over the University of Minnesota. She is from Waddell,
Ariz. and will be joining teammate Brittany Tucker on the island
next season.
