ROCK, Ark. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf
team fired a 316 in the final round of the UALR Women's Golf
Classic climbing one spot to fifth Tuesday at the Diamante Country
Club.
After
opening with a 73 in the first round to tie for second, Ashley
Olynick finished in a tie for 16th. Courtney Peeler continued her
steady play shooting her third sub-80 round to with a 78. She was
the only Islander to better 80 in all three rounds firing a 234
(77-79-78) to place 19th a shot behind Olynick. Ashley Watkins led
the way for the Islanders on the final day of the tournament
shooting a 76 after rounds of 81 and 82 on the first day of the
event. She finished tied for 33rd at 239. Ryann White and Melissa Fahey finished
61st and 72nd with scores of 246 and 250, respectively.
As
a team, the Islanders placed sixth in the event with a 949
(311-322-316) – three shots behind Eastern Michigan for fifth
at 946. Host UALR won the team title in a playoff with first-day
leader Florida International. The two finished the 72 holes of
regulation tied at 927. The duo finished seven shots ahead of Oral
Roberts and Central Arkansas who tied for third at 934.
UMKC's
Kelsey Kipp won the individual title with a three-round score of
221 (70-76-75) to finish a shot ahead of Stephany Fleet of Eastern
Michigan. Fleet had rounds of 75-71-76.
The
Islander team next heads to the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic
beginning this Sunday. It is the final tune-up for the team before
heading to the Southland Conference Tournament in Lake Charles held
April 20-22.
