Arlington The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's
basketball team lost a 88-62 decision on the road to UT Arlington
in a Southland Conference match up on Wednesday night at Texas
Hall.
The Islanders
fall to 8-12 on the year and 3-4 in SLC play. The Mavericks improve to 12-9 overall
and 6-1 in SLC action.
The Islanders
fell behind early and fought back, but were unable to keep the pace
with the Mavericks throughout the game.
In the first
half, the Islanders fell behind 2-0 to start the game but answered
with an Adrienne
Scott jumper to tie it at 2-2. The Mavericks scored the next six
points to take an 8-2 lead.
A Lauren
Smith jumper cut the score to 8-4 UTA before another Maverick
jumper put the score at 10-4 going into the first media
timeout. After the timeout,
a Deziree
Green cut the deficit to four points at 10-6 before the
Mavericks went on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 23-6 lead.
"We started off
pretty well in the first half." said Head Coach Robert
Robinson. "They were a
very athletic team and kept running the floor making it tough to
keep up."
The Islanders
were not deterred, going on a 14-to-7 run to close the gap to 10
points at 30-20. Scott
started the run with a jumper at the 7:20 mark of the half and
added a free throw to make it 23-9. UTA then hit a three-pointer to extend
the lead back to 13 at 26-9.
Smith then
added a lay up for the Islanders to make it 26-11 with 5:42
left. The Mavericks added a
jumper before the Islanders answered right back to make it
28-15.
Scott added
another jumper followed by a UTA lay up to make it 30-17 before a
Shaye
Montgomery three-pointer made it 30-20 with 3:53 left in the
half.
The two teams
played fairly even the rest of the half, as they went into halftime
with a 37-26 score.
Montgomery led
the Islanders with eight points in the first half. Scott had seven while Smith added six
points.
In the second
half, the Islanders were never able to recover, as they never got
closer than the 11 they trailed by at halftime and fell behind by
as many as 29. Louivina
Robinson ended the game by hitting a three-pointer to put the final
at 88-62 in favor of the Mavericks.
"We struggled
on defense tonight." said
Robinson. "We gave them too
much space in the offensive game."
Scott and
Montgomery tied for the lead in points with 16. The 16 points for Scott was a
season-high for the Islander sophomore. Scott also led all
Islanders with five rebounds in the game.
Candice
Champion led the Mavericks with game-highs in both scoring and
rebounding. Champion scored
20 points and pulled in 11 rebounds.
The Islanders
return home to friendly confines of the American Bank Center this
weekend as they take on Nicholls State in an SLC game.
"It's nice to
come back and have a home game." said Robinson. "They should have some added incentive
with homecoming and they should be ready."
The game will
also be the homecoming game for the team and all TAMUCC fans are
encouraged to come out and support the festivities this
Saturday. Game time is set
for 7 PM.
