ISLANDERS FINISH STRONG AT SLC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP

HOUSTON – Meghan Lemke won the Southland Conference title in the 3,000-meter run and was one of four Islanders to finish in the top seven in the mile highlighting the final day of the Southland Conference Indoor Championship at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.

Lemke won the 3,000-meter run by less than a quarter of a second and was second in the mile with a school record time of 5:03.58 as the Islanders scored 17 of their 41.33 points to climb to sixth. Courtney Johnson was fifth in 5:13.55, Sheila Salil sixth (5:14.86) and Caitlin Arambula was seventh in 5:15.44.

Hannah Maenius placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.67 breaking her own school-record mark of 2:16.11. Kendra Harris placed eighth in the triple jump with a mark off 11.45m (37'6-3/4").

"I feel really good about how we finished today especially with the injury to Anne Ronoh," said director of track and field Shawn Flanagan. "We ran really in the middle and distance events. Meghan performed extremely well and I was very please with how we did in the mile with five runners in the top seven."

Hickel Woolery set a school record in the shot to place fourth as the men finished tenth. His throw of 16.79m (55'1") broke the record he set at last year's meet. The Islanders received a pair of eigth-place finishes as well. Alex Vasquez was eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.70, while Erik Burciaga was eighth in the 3000 with a time of 8:42.37.

"The men did as well as they could have with the personnel they have," said Flanagan. "I am confident with more events outdoor that we can finish better at the outdoor meet.

"I an all I am fairly satisfied with what the women have accomplished this weekend and overall we had some great individual performances. We have a lot of work to do, but I am confident we have the ability to improve on both sides."
