Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis player Laurent Montoisy has
been named the Southland Conference men's tennis player of the
week. The honor is the
first of the season for Montoisy, a sophomore from
Lasne, Belgium.
Montoisy had
previously been named the SLC Freshman of the Year last season and
while being named the runner-up in voting for the conference
MVP.
This season,
Montoisy started out well, recording a 3-0 record in singles
competition in the first weekend of the season to go along with a
2-1 record in doubles competition with Jose Zunino. The team of Montoisy/Zunino opened the
season with a loss against Mehdi Benhammou and Ivan Salec of #68
Radford by a 9-7 score on Friday.
Montoisy
bounced back by taking down Stefan Bojic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2
in the singles portion of the match. On Saturday, Montoisy/Zunino beat Will
Kendall and Stephen Vogl of #44 Indiana, 8-3. Montoisy followed up with a singles
victory over Jeremy Langer by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
On Sunday,
Montoisy and Zunino once again took down their challengers,
defeating Ben Dunbar and Elliot Chang of #42 New Mexico by an 8-2
score. Montoisy then
proceeded to finish off his undefeated weekend in singles action by
beating Graeme Kassautzki in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Overall, the
Islanders were 1-2 in dual matches this past weekend, winning
against #44 Indiana and dropping tough matches against #42 New
Mexico and #68 Radford.
Montoisy and
the Islanders will be back in action next on Friday, Feb. 13 in San
Antonio against Nebraska at 10 AM before traveling back to Corpus
Christi to take on Texas-Pan American the same day in a match
scheduled for 6 PM.
