Jade
Davis led a foursome Texas A&M-Corus Christi women's
basketball players in double digits as they rallied to within two
points late in the game after trailing by double figures in the
second half but it wasn't enough as the Islanders fell 69-63 to
UTSA on Saturday at the Convocation Center.
With the loss,
the Islanders drop to 6-11 on the year and 2-3 in the Southland
Conference. The Roadrunners move to 10-7 on the season and are 3-1
in the league.
Trailing by 13,
36-23, after a three-point basket by Amber Gregg, the Islanders
went on a 12-4 run to pull within five. Myeisha
Myles opened the run with four straight points in the paint to
make it a 9-point affair 16:59 left.
Following a
putback by Ryba Pawlacyzk,
Davis drained one of two Islander three-point baskets on the day to
make it 38-30. Monica Gibbs, who led all players with 21 points,
again made it a 10-point contest with a layin, but TAMUCC rolled
off five points in a row.
Myles, who
finished with 14 points, and Lauren
Smith each scored in the lane and Latoya Thomas hit a free
throw for the Islanders. Thomas' foul shot made it a five-point
contest 40-35 with 14:16 remaining.
Jordan Stark
would allow the Roadrunners to extend its lead back to 10 with a
three-point basket with 7:35 to go.
Still trailing
by 10, the Islanders would embark on a 10-2 run to bring themselves
within two points after a pair of Adrienne
Scott free throws with 52 seconds left. Scott, who had a
double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, netted six points all
from the foul line during the run. Deziree
Green and Myles also scored during the stretch as UTSA was
1-of-6 during the stretch with three turnovers.
Gregg would hit
a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left to make it a four-point
game, 65-61. After Davis missed a bucket, Onika Anderson turned the
ball over on a steal by Myles. This time Davis converted the layin
to make it a 65-63 game with 21 seconds to go, but TAMUCC would not
score again
Gregg, who was
8-of-8 from the foul line iced the game with four free throws in
the final 18 seconds.
UTSA finished
the game 22-of-26 from the foul line for 84.6%. Aside from Gregg,
Gibbs was 9-of-12 behind the stripe. The Islanders struggled in
comparison hitting 65.5% as the team was 19-of-29.
Davis led the
Islanders with 15 points, while Myles had 14 points to go with nine
rebounds. Green came off the bench with 10 points. Aside from
Gibbs' 21, Gregg netted 18. Pawlaczyk and Anderson finished with 11
and 10 rebounds, respectively.
The Islander
women step out of Southland Conference action on Wednesday when
they host Texas-Pan American in the American Bank Center at 7
p.m.
