San Marcos, Texas The Texas A&M Corpus Christi
women's basketball team fell behind early and rallied late, but it
was not enough as the Islanders fell to the Texas State Bobcats by
a score of 69-65 in their Southland Conference contest.
The Islanders
fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-1 in SLC play while the Bobcats
improve to 7-7 on the year, 1-1 in SLC action.
Despite a
career-high 21 points by Jade Davis and season-high 15 points by
Adrienne Scott, the Islanders were unable to complete the comeback
from down 23 points in the first half.
In the first
half, the Islanders were unable to find a rhythm offensively while
the Bobcats were shooting lights out from the field. The Bobcats connected on 55.2% of their
shots in the first half, including hitting over 62% during the
first 19 minutes of the game.
The Islanders
fell behind 6-0 to start the game before a Shaye Montgomery
three-pointer put the Islanders on the board at 6-3. The Islanders would be able to get any
closer in the early going, with the Bobcats extending the lead to
as many as 23 points at 33-10 with 6:23 left in the first
half. The Islanders closed
the deficit to 37-18 going into halftime.
"We didn't
match Texas States' intensity in the first 10 minutes of the game."
said Islander Head Coach Robert Robinson. "We struggled with shot selection and
we weren't getting the offensive rebounds on our missed shots."
Once the second
half started, the Islanders played like a brand new team. They came out with relentless
effort, slowly chipping away at the Bobcats margin.
Davis scored 17
of her 21 points and Scott scored 13 of her 15 points in the second
half as the Islanders were able to outscore the Bobcats by a 47-32
margin in the second half of play.
"We picked
things up defensively and gained momentum in the offensive game."
said coach Robinson. "We
showed a lot of heart and intensity and everybody contributed on
the defensive end."
A made layup by
Deziree Green to make the score 56-45 marked the first time the
Islanders were able to get the deficit under 13 points in the
second half. Following a
made Bobcat layup, Davis hit a three-pointer to get the deficit to
10 points at 58-48.
A pair of free
throws by Green got the margin down to eight points before another
made layup by the Bobcats made it 60-50. Shaye Montgomery hit another
three-pointer for the Islanders to get the margin down to seven at
60-53 with 6:36 left in the game.
The two teams
traded buckets several times until a layup and foul shot by Green
put the score at 65-61 and brought the deficit to within two
possessions at the 1:51 mark.
Scott hit
another huge jumper with 1:27 left to make the score 65-63 in favor
of the Bobcats. The Bobcats
added a jumper before Scott answered with another of her own with
38 seconds left to put the deficit back to two at 67-65.
The Islanders
were unable to complete the comeback however, as the Bobcats ended
the game by making two free throws with three second left in the
game, putting the final score at 69-65 in favor of Texas State.
The Islanders
were led in scoring by Davis with her career-high 21 points. Scott contributed a season-high
15 points. Green added a
double-double as she had 10 points and a team-high 11
rebounds. Scott also added
nine rebounds to go along with her scoring.
The Islanders
now return home the American Bank Center on Saturday at 1 PM as
they take on Northwestern State. The game will be broadcast on 1150 AM
KCCT with the call by Matt Hicks.
