Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi student-athletes Shadrack Songok and Hickel
Woolery have been named to the All-Midwest Region team by the
United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association it
was announced this week.
Songok was
named to the team for the third time in his career after a
third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run last weekend to qualify
for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the event.
Songok stopped the clock in 13:59.64. He finished just five seconds
behind Brent Vaughn of
Colorado and less than a second behind Vaughn's teammate Stephen
Pifer. Songok, who was all-region in the event each of the past two
years, will defend his title in the 10,000-meter run at the
national meet and not compete in the 5,000.
Woolery, who
was 11th in the nation in the event a year ago, climbed a spot from
third in the discus a year ago at the Midwest Region meet to second
this season earning all-region honors for the second year in a row.
His best toss of 54.49 meters (178'9") made him one of just two
competitors at the region to break 54 meters. Region champion Jason
Schutz of Colorado State, who had a top mark of 55.73 meters
(182'10"), was the other.
The tandem head
to Des Moines, Iowa early next week to compete at the NCAA Outdoor
Championship host by Drake University. Woolery will compete in the
preliminaries on Wednesday afternoon with hopes of making Friday's
finals. Songok will look to defend his crown in the final event of
the day on Thursday.
