ISLANDER TRACK ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC ACCOLADES

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok was named the Capital One Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in Men's Outdoor Track and Field the league announced on Thursday and was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District VI First Team in track and cross country along with Brent Bartz.

For the women, Meghan Lemke was named to Southland Conference's All-Academic Team in women's track and cross country

Songok was named the Student-Athlete of the Year in outdoor track completing a sweep of the league's Student-Athlete of the Year honors in indoor and outdoor track and cross country. He won both 1,500 and 5,000-meter runs at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships this May and was third in the 5,000 at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet this past weekend. He will defend his 10,000-meter title at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa next week.

Earlier this year, Songok won the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and was seventh at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last November after repeating as the conference and region champion. The Kenyan has a 3.21 grade point average in chemistry.

For the second-straight year, Bartz from Belton has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District VI First Team. A biology major, Bartz holds a 3.82 grade point average. He finished eighth in the shot put with a mark of 15.32 meters (50'3-1/4") at the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship before an injury ended his campaign.

Lemke was named to the Southland Conference All-Academic team in women's cross country and track & field. The junior from Tomahawk, Wisc., finished third in the 1,500 and fourth in the 5,000-meters at the SLC Outdoor Championships. The distance runner, maintaining a 3.51 GPA as health science major, finished fourth in the final of the mile run at the SLC Indoor meet and ninth at the 3,000-meter run.
