SCHUMANN SIGNS PAIR TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball coach Jake Schumann announced the signings of two players to National Letters of Intent to play for the Islanders next season.

Elena Crabtree, a pitcher from Blinn Junior College, and Sandy Schumann from Corpus Christi Carroll High School become the newest members of the A&M-Corpus Christi softball program.

Crabtree was granted a medical redshirt at Blinn Junior College last year after pitching 13 innings. This year, she has a 0.80 earned run average which ranks among the best in the junior college ranks. She has been named the conference pitcher of the week four times already this season.

Crabtree was a four-year letterwinner at Montgomery High School in College Station where she was a two-time first-team all-district performer. As a freshman, she was named the newcomer of the year and was on the all-county first team and followed that up with pitcher of the year honors as well as the defensive player of the year as a sophomore. She was all-county most valuable player as a junior and a senior as well as being named first-team all-district.

"With Elena's signing we solidify our staff for next season," Schumann said. "She is a big-time sign and someone who has the skills to win 15 games for us next year. Her work ethic and drive to win fits what we are trying to accomplish from an attitude point of view to get this program back to the winning tradition of a few years back."

Schumann, a middle infielder, is in her senior season at Mary Carroll High School where she was named first-team all-district three consecutive seasons. As a sophomore she was named second team All-South Texas as well as first team All-Metro.

"Sandy is great athlete that has excellent defensive actions and some pop in her bat. We will continue to try to recruit local talent of Sandy's ability and we our proud that she has decide to become an Islander. She will step in our middle infield and compete for a job and add depth to a position that was lacking in options for us this season."

"Anytime you can get stronger up the middle like we have with Sandy and Elena you give your self a chance to win."
