The Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi pitching staff combined to give up just four
hits over three games as the Islanders dominated Prairie View
A&M 6-0 and 8-0 at Chapman Field.
Larissa Martin
gave up just one hit in the opening game and walked just one in the
Islanders' 6-0 win. She
improved to 3-2 on the year and tossed her first shutout as an
Islander. Martin retired 12-straight batters before Brenda Sneed
singled through the left side for the Panthers only hit.
A&M-Corpus
Christi struck early with a run in the bottom of the first, taking
advantage of four-straight two-out walks from Prairie View A&M
starter Analisa Gonzalez.
Kim Connelly picked up the free RBI on the five pitch walk, scoring
Stephanie Estrada from third. Gonzalez walked four batters in 4.2
innings in the loss.
The Islanders
(9-11) extended their lead with four runs in the third inning
thanks to four hits and an error. Andrea Simancas led off the inning
with a single to center and later stole second before Stephanie
Estrada drove her home with a double to left center. Hurdt later reached on an error before
Kim Connelly reached on a walk to load the bases. Lauren Peters drove in Estrada and
Hurdt with a single to right center to give the Islanders a 5-0
advantage.
A&M-Corpus
Christi scored one more in the sixth on a bases loaded walk by
Andrea Gonzalez. Martin
faced two more than the minimum in the win, snapping the Islanders
four-game losing skid.
In the second
game, Hurdt made her 2008 pitching debut by tossing four shutout
innings with four strikeouts and walking one.
The Islanders
scored early and often in their third shutout of the year. In the bottom of the first they
strung together three two-out hits that resulted in three
runs. They would go on to
score two more in the second and another in the third.
A&M-Corpus Christi
pounded out eight hits in the second game and a total of 14 for the
double header. The
Islanders will step back into Southland Conference play this
weekend for a three-game series against
Northwestern State at Chapman Field.
