Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi director of tennis Steve Moore and the rest
of the Islander men's tennis team can thank the tennis community of
Corpus Christi for their best finish in the HEB Team Championship,
falling to Texas Tech 4-2 in the finals.
"I really believe
this is one of the best tennis communities in the country. To come out and support the team
like they did was incredible and to house all 80 players and staff
really says about their support," Moore said.
The Islanders
opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Nebraska and turned
around and gutted out a 4-1 over top-seeded Old Dominion. "I have never been so proud of a
team for the way they competed over the weekend. To go out and beat two teams like
Nebraska and Old Dominion shows how much character they have,
considering the schedule they have faced thus far," Moore
said.
Prior to the HEB
Team Championship, the Islanders faced Baylor, TCU, Arizona,
Clemson as well as others which is quite possibly the toughest
schedule in the country up to that point. "I think this weekend we really
developed an identity. In
every match this year we have played hard and these young guys are
starting to see that when you work hard, it will start paying
off."
The Islanders are
coming off one of their best years in school history last year,
finishing higher than any other team while losing their top two
players in the process.
Moore has filled the roster with two freshmen, a pair of
sophomores, a junior and a senior.
