FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi distance
runner Shadrack Songok was the final runner with a provisional time
selected to compete in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor
Championship. On Friday, Songok proved to be more than a worthy
selection capturing the second national title of his career with a
time of 13:51.26.
Songok, who was
competing for the first time at the indoor championsh, defeated
Jacob Korir of Eastern Kentucky by nearly two seconds. Korir
stopped the clock in 13:52.91. The time was seven seconds faster
than his qualifying time of 13:58.19 which he ran last week at
Notre Dame.
"Shadrack ran a
superb tactical race," said Islander head coach Shawn Flanagan. "He
set the pace by leading the first 10 laps. He then dropped back
some before moving back into second behing Korir with two laps to
go. He made his move to get back in the lead on the final lap.
"It was just an
awesome performance."

second national title for Songok, who last spring won the
10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. He was seventh
at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in November. He is now a
five-time All-American.

Islander track team began the outdoor season on Friday at the UTSA
