GAINESVILLE, Fla. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's
golf team shot a 308 (+28) as a team to finished tied for second at
the Gainesville Shootout after Thursday's opening round as Ashley
Olynick led the way with an opening round of 73 to finish the day
in fifth.
The Islanders
are just seven strokes behind first-round leader and Southland
Conference rival Texas State. The Bobcats had team score of 301
(+21). A&M-Corpus Christi is tied with Illinois State for
second at 308. They are one shot ahead of pair of Big 10 schools
Michigan and Illinois.
Olynick fired a
3-over 73 and is three strokes behind first round leaders Nicole
Schachner of Florida and Lindsay Davis of Michigan. The leaders
shot even-par 70s on the first day. Chelsey Cooper was 13th with a
76, while Ashley Watkins tied for 28th with a 79. Katie O'Donnell
finished one shot behind Watkins with an 80 to finish 38th, while
Melissa Fahey shot an 84 and tied for 61st.
"Coach Carol
Blackmar has worked tirelessly to prepare this team to be
successful and it was reflected in the performance they put forth
today," said Islander Associate AD Arthur Haas, who traveled with
team in place of Blackmar who is not with the team due to family
reasons.
"As an
administrator it is refreshing to see a group of young ladies go
out there and represent the university with class and compete well
against teams like Michigan, Illinois and Iowa, but they were quick
to remind this was just day one and there is a lot of work to be
done."
The tournament
runs through Saturday.
