The Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team opened Southland
Conference play in fine fashion, sweeping Texas-Pan American
7-0.
All but two
singles matches were won in straight sets, while the Islanders won
all three doubles matches.
In doubles
play, Mike Pavlov and Dmitry Novikov defeated Brett Bernstein and
Ashwin Vijayaragavan, 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, while Jose Zunino and
Laurent Montoisy took down Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving by the same
score at the No. 2 spot.
James Langford and Jan Cingel completed the sweep with a 9-8 win
over Marcus Dornauf and Nirvick Mohinta.
In singles
play, Montoisy, playing at the No. 1 position, defeated
Avila, 6-1, 6-2, while Novikov beat Mohinta by the same score at
No. 3 singles. At No. 2
singles, Pavlov took a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Vijayaragavan and
Zunino won his match over Irvin, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 at the No. 4
spot.
"It was a very
focused effort from our guys to win this match 7-0," director of
tennis Steve Moore said. "I
am really pleased with the way this young team is developing and
competing."
The Islanders
will be back in action Feb. 29 when they host the nation's longest
running tournament in the country in the prestigious HEB College
Team Classic. All eight
teams hold an International Tennis Association ranking of under 50
and is one of the country's most competitive tournaments year in
and year out.
