For the first
time in school history, the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
men's basketball team will play a NCAA Division I game on campus
when it hosts UTSA in the Dr. Jack and Susie Dugan Wellness Center
at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The game
against UTSA caps a day of events marking the dedication of the new
Wellness Center and honoring Dr. Jack Dugan, whose generous $1
million donation seeded funding for the building. The dedication is
tentatively scheduled for 10:30 a.m. followed by a public open
house.
"This game
provides a great opportunity for fans to watch the Islanders take
on a Southland Conference rival and see our new facility," said
University President Flavius Killebrew. "The new wellness center is
an important addition that has created a wonderful environment for
the campus community to pursue fitness and wellness."
The game was
moved to the new center due to a scheduling conflict with the
American Bank Center. The building will house the Islander Athletic
Department offices as well as be the home to school's Recreational
Sports Department.
"It is exciting
to bring the first-ever Division I basketball game to the Island,"
said interim athletic director Scott Street. "The Dugan Wellness
Center is a wonderful addition to campus and this is a tremendous
opportunity to showcase this great facility."
The Islanders
have played their home basketball games on two courts in their
young history. Beginning with the 1999-2000 season through the
2003-04 season, A&M-Corpus Christi played at Memorial Coliseum.
The Islanders moved into the American Bank Center for the 2004-05
season and have played their home games there since.
