Nacogdoches, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball
team fell 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-19) to Stephen F. Austin in a
Southland Conference road game.
The Islanders
fall to 3-13 on the year, with a 1-5 record in SLC matches. SFA improves to 15-3 on the year
and 6-0 in SLC action.
In the first
set, the Islanders scored first on a service ace by Jessica Jennett
to open the match. A kill
by SFA would then tie the set at 1-1 and an attack error by TAMUCC
would give the Lady Jacks a 2-1 lead.
A kill by Holly
Watson tied the match at 2-2, but would mark the last time the set
was tied as SFA mounted a strong attack, scoring 15 of the next 19
points to take a 17-6 lead.
A Kasey
McBrearty kill put the Islanders back within 10 at 17-7 but the
Islanders would not be able to mount a comeback. SFA outscored the Islanders 8-to-3
over the final points of the match to take a 25-10 set win, capped
off by a kill from Arielle Daron to give the Lady Jacks a 1-0 set
lead.
In the second
set, the Islanders came out strong, keeping the score even early
and taking a 7-6 lead on a Lauren Paslay kill. After an SFA kill, McBrearty once
again put the Islanders ahead on a kill to put the score at
8-7.
The Lady Jacks
would score the next three points to take a 10-8 lead over the
Islanders before committing a service error to put the score at
10-8. After trading points
to 11-9, the Lady Jacks scored four straight times to put the
advantage at 15-9.
The two teams
split the next four points to put the set at 17-11 before SFA
reeled off five straight points to open their largest margin in the
set at 22-11. A Holly
Watson kill got the Islanders back within 10 at 22-12, but they
were not able to mount a comeback as the two teams traded the next
five points. Kelsey Owens
hit a service ace to finish the scoring at 25-14 to give the Lady
Jacks a 2-0 set lead.
In the third
and final set, the Islander kept fighting, going point-for-point
with SFA early on. After
falling behind 10-9, a Jessica Korda block once again tied the
score at 10-10.
SFA scored the
next two points, but the Islanders would not be deterred, getting a
kill from Korda and an attack error from SFA to once again tie the
score at 12-12.
The Islanders
then took the lead at 13-12 on a Paslay kill. After a service error knotted the
score once again, Korda provided another kill to give the Islanders
the advantage at 14-13.
After reaching
a 15-15 tie, the Islanders fell behind 16-15 before a setting error
knotted up the score at 16-16.
The Lady Jacks
reeled off the next three points to take a 19-16 advantage, forcing
the Islanders to take a timeout. After the break in action, the
Islanders forced two straight SFA errors to pull within 19-18.
TAMUCC was
unable to get the score back level however, as consecutive points
by the Lady Jacks put the score at 21-18.
A kill by Korda
pulled the Islanders to within 21-19, but the Islanders were unable
to score again. SFA scored
four straight points to close out the set 25-19 and the match at
3-0.
The Islanders
were led offensively by Korda, who had eight kills on the night,
along with McBrearty who registered five kills as the second
leading scorer for TAMUCC.
Jennett
recorded her second consecutive match with double-digit assists,
handing out 16 on the night.
Lauren Railey
of SFA led all hitters on the night, tallying nine kills in the
match. Whitney Schott had a
match-high 32 assists for the Lady Jacks and while Railey also had
a match-high 16 digs for SFA.
The Islanders
are back in action this Saturday afternoon as they host McNeese
State on the TAMUCC campus at Moody Fieldhouse. Match time is set for 2 p.m. and will
be followed by the Islander men's and women's basketball programs
hosting the Islander Invasion, the annual season preview of the
teams.
