Songok's second win of the season the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
men claimed their second-straight team crown, while the Islander
women were second at the Islander Splash Cross Country meet Friday
at
West Guth Park.
Songok won by 33
seconds with a time of 25:20 as the Islanders placed all five of
their scoring runners in the top eight. Edward Kemei was the second
A&M-Corpus Christi runner to finish placing fourth (26:01)
followed by J.R. Pulido in fifth (26:19) and Scott Vance in sixth
(26:32). Erik Burciaga placed eighth for the hosts in a time of
26:49. Kirk Dalheim placed 15th in 27:15, while Eloy Zertuche was
18th in 27:33.
A&M-Corpus
Christi finished 20 points ahead of Rice who had 44 points, while
Stephen F. Austin was a distant third in 103.Texas-Pan American
placed fourth in 130 and Prairie View A&M fifth in 173.
"I was really
happy with the men," said A&M-Corpus Christi coach Shawn
Flanagan. "Edward really came through for us. He ran the best race
in the three years he has been here. This was also the best I have
seen Kirk run in his two years.
The women placed
three runners in the top 10 to finish second behind the Texas
Longhorns, who swept the top four spots led by Betzy Jimenez. Texas
totaled 16 points on the day while the Islanders had 56. The
Islanders were 35 points ahead of Southland Conference rival
Stephen F. Austin, who had 91 points. Houston was fourth and
Texas-Pan American fifth.
Meghan Lemke
crossed first for the Islanders as the eighth finisher overall and
was the seventh attached runner in 17:57. Lydia Kimeli (17:59) and
Sarah De Los Santos (18:10) also finished in the top 10, with
Gillian Gatewood 12th in 18:24. Daniela Prado was the fifth
finisher in 18th spot for the hosts in a time of 18:57. Tarryn
DeBeer was 19th while Courtney Johnson was 25th in 18:59 and 19:10,
respectively. Caitlin Arambula (34, 19:22), Shannon Clarke (40,
19:39) and Lauren Hulse (49, 20:11) also ran for the hosts.
"It was a solid
race for the women it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad," said
Flanagan. "We just know where we need to be come the conference
meet."
The Islanders are
now off for two weeks before heading to Fayetteville, Ark. where
they will compete in the Chili Pepper Festival.
