Texas A&M
University-Corpus Christi Director of Athletics
Brian Teter and head women's basketball coach Robert Robinson
announced the University of Texas women's basketball program will
make its first-ever appearance in Corpus Christi when the teams
square off on Saturday, December 8 at 1:30 p.m. in the American
Bank Center
"This is a great
opportunity for us," said Robinson. "It will be a huge draw for the
city and our fans. It should be an exciting environment for women's
basketball in Corpus Christi."
The TAMUCC-UT
showdown is the first of a two-game series over the next two
seasons with A&M-Corpus Christi returning to Austin during the
2008-09 season. The teams have met on three previous occasions with
Longhorns winning all three. Last season, Texas escaped with a
73-68 win, after winning 77-65, in 2005. The first meeting was in
January of 2003 with Texas winning 64-37.
"This is a win-win
for everybody and it makes a statement about both our program and
our city," Teter said. "I
am thrilled the University of Texas wants to come and play us here
in Corpus Christi because our program has had some success, we play
in a tremendous venue (American Bank Center), and the city loves to
come out for big events. I
know there are a lot of UT supporters in the community, but there
will be a lot of Islander fans, as well."
The remainder of
the 2007-08 Islander women's schedule will be released in the next
couple weeks. For ticket
