Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi cross country and track and field head coach
Shawn Flanagan has announced the signing of eight athletes to
National Letter-of-Intents for the 2007-08 season.
Joining the
Islander men are cross country/distance runners Scott Vance of
Australia and Erik Burciaga, who is the brother of Magaly Burciaga
and is a transfer from Central Arizona College, while the track and
field team will be bolstered by the addition of middle distance
runner John Iler and sprinter Vincent Sarate.
"Scott and Eric
will solidify things in cross country and in the longer distances,"
said the Islander coach. "We are always looking for sprinters and
Vincent should help strengthen that area, while John will help in
the middle distances."
Flanagan, who
signed track and cross country runners Courtney Johnson, Daniela
Prado, and Caitlin Arambula in the fall, has also added four female
athletes. Sarah De Los Santos of
Shallowater High School and Lauren Hulse of William Floyd High
School in Mastic Beach, N.Y. will both run track and cross country.
Middle distance runner Abby Greenwell of Flour Bluff High School
and Jamakka Halton from San Antonio's Taft High School will help in
the jumps.
"We now have five
signees in cross country to go with five returnees on the women's
team," said Flanagan. "Last year, we lacked depth in cross country,
but with the signees we should see dramatic improvement this fall.
They will also help in track in the spring.
"Jamakka and Abby
will be important parts of the track teams."
