Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Director of
Athletics
Brian Teter announced today that Jake Schumann will become the
fourth head softball coach in the school's history.
Schumann comes to
A&M-Corpus Christi from Texas A&M-Kingsville where he was
the head coach for the past four seasons. In his final season, he guided the
Javelinas to a 34-22 record and a trip to the NCAA Regional
Tournament. He will leave
TAMUK as the all-time winningest softball coach in school history
with 120 victories.
During his time at
Kingsville, he guided the Javelinas to three 30-win seasons and
improved the team batting average in each of the four seasons he
was there. Schumann coached
19 All-Lone Star Conference players, as well a Pitcher of the Year
and the school's first-ever Player of the Year. He also coached the program's first
All-American.
"I am excited
about Jake Schumann taking the reigns and leading our softball
program back to the level where it was just a short time ago," said
Teter. "Jake is a winner and I really like his energy and vision
for where he wants to take Islander softball. He is a tremendous
fit for the department and for the university."
Prior to arriving
in Kingsville, Schumann was the head coach at Carl Albert State
College (Okla.) for two years. While at Carl Albert, Schumann
turned a team around almost overnight. The year before Schumann
arrived, the team posted a 19-35 record. With Schumann at the helm
in 2002, Carl Albert went 31-23 and was the Region II runner-up. In
2003 the Vikings went 31-17 and finished third in the Regional
Tournament. During his time at Carl Albert, the team posted batting
averages of .301 in 2002 and .331 in 2003. His team produced five
All-Region infielders for the 2003 season.
As concerned about his student-athletes performance off the field
as on, Schumann's teams produced grade point averages of 3.39 in
2002 and 3.19 in 2003. He was also an Educational Guidance
Specialist at Carl Albert. Schumann was responsible for academic
and career counseling for ETS students, provided information on
secondary and post secondary opportunities, developed and conducted
college preparatory and leadership workshops and served as an
advisor to new employees.
Prior to his time at Carl Albert, Schumann was an assistant coach
at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Okla. At Northeastern
Schumann assisted in all aspects of the program, including
recruiting, budgeting, travel, on-field instruction, classroom
monitoring and field maintenance.
Northeastern Oklahoma posted a 101-16 record in his two seasons
with the squad. In 2000, Northeastern finished third in the
nation.
In his four seasons as an assistant and head coach in Oklahoma
Schumann coached 19 all-regional players and six All-Americans.
While he was at Northeastern, he also worked as an Alternative
Education Instructor at Will Rogers Middle School. He developed and
carried out lesson plans for alternative education setting.
Schumann also taught math, science, social studies and English.
He served as assistant baseball coach at Hill-Murray High School in
St. Paul, Minn. While at Hill-Murray, he was a student teacher for
Harding High School and Murray Magnet Junior High School.
Schumann is a native of Maplewood, Minn. He played baseball two
years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M before transferring to Ball
State University. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in
Criminal Justice from
St. Xavier University in Chicago, Ill. He also has a Secondary
Social Studies Certification from Concordia University in St. Paul,
Minn.
Schumann has served as an athletic coordinator for the National
Youth Sports Program sponsored by the NCAA.
"I want to thank
Brian Teter for the opportunity to coach at Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi," Schumann said. "I
am excited about the chance to turn this program around and guide
it to the top of the Southland Conference and return to the NCAA
Tournament."
