LATE SURGE PUSHES SHSU PAST ISLANDERS

HUNTSVILLE – With the game tied at six after five innings, Sam Houston State broke open the game with 11 total runs in the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 17-6 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the second game of the three-game Southland Conference series.

Karl Krailo led the Bearkats at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBI, while catcher Heath Pugh drove in three runs and scored twice to drop the Islanders to 1-4 in the Southland Conference and 14-13 overall. The Bearkats are now 18-8 and 4-1 in the league.

Tied at six entering the bottom of the sixth inning, Nick Zaleski greeted Islander reliever Brian Anderson with a home run. Bobby Verbick and Krailo each drove in a run on a single and double, respectively.

Anderson, who suffered the loss to fall to 1-1, and Trey Maldonado allowed eight more runs in the seventh. Krailo had a three-run double in the inning, while Clint Mann and Pugh had two-run doubles.

The Islanders jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. Jason Graham led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later on a double by David Williams. With two outs, Jon Kourie hit a two-run single driving in David Williams and Chris Widner and later crossed the plate on a hit by Chase Williams. Martin Parra scored the fifth run on a grounder by Bryan Gerondale.

The Bearkats responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning and one in the third off starter Omar Gutierrez to tie the game. A&M-Corpus Christi escaped further damage in the inning as Graham and Gerondale combined to turn a triple play.

They added a run in the fourth inning off Emerson Trager for a 6-5 lead.

Bryan Gerondale evened the game at six with a solo home run. It was his fourth home run of the season.

Jacob Howard claimed the victory for SHSU as he moved to 5-2. He allowed six runs on eight hits in six innings of work. The Bearkats finished with 21 hits, which, along with the 17 runs, is the most allowed by the Islanders this season

The series concludes with a game at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
