KINGSVILLE Ten members of the Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi track and field team struck gold at the Javelina Relays
including a record-setting performance by Mellaneisha Gentry in the
long jump.
Gentry recorded a
leap of 5.37 meters, narrowly missing the regional qualifying. She also won the triple jump
with a leap of 12.29 meters. The 4x100 relay team consisting of
Alisha Lenz, Antionette, Cadeen James and Valerie Stewart teamed to
take the gold in a time of 48.76.
Stewart took the
gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.92, while Aminat
Odinbaku and Price finished fourth and fifth respectively.
The Islander women
finished in the top six of seven places in the 800-meter run with
Hannah Maenius taking the gold in a time of 2:19.75. They also dominated the 1500-meter
run, taking the top three spots with Lydia Kimeli crossing the line
first with a time of 5:00.00, narrowly edging out Cynthia
Santaella, who crossed the line in a time of 5:00.83.
On the men's side,
Shadrack Songok dominated the only two events he ran in, easily
winning the 800-meter run in a time of 1:56.93, three seconds ahead
of the next finisher. He
also won the 1500-meter dash with a time of 4:01.18. A&M-Corpus Christi took the top
four places in both events.
Placidio Madera
and Anthony Yates won first and second in the 200-meter dash, with
Madera taking the gold with a time of 22.74. Yates was a close second with a time
of 23.88.
The men also won
the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays with times of 43.79 and 3:20.11
respectively.
In the field
events, Hickel Woolery won the discus throw with a time of 159-08,
while Brent Bartz won the javelin with a toss of 184-2.50.
