WACO The Islander softball
team dropped a pair of games at the Getterman Classic, including a
9-5 nine-inning setback to Stephen F. Austin.
A&M-Corpus
Christi opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Southern Miss where
Brandi Alonzo hit a walk-off two run blast in the bottom of the
seventh.
The Islanders
managed just two hits in the game, both coming from Andrea
Gonzalez, including a solo shot over the left field wall in the top
of the second that tied the game at two. She would pick up her second hit of
the day in the top of the sixth.
A&M-Corpus
Christi tied the game in the top of the seventh when freshman Erika
Rios led off the inning with a walk. Caitlin Kessler pinch ran for Rios and
would be moved to second on a throwing error on Amber Robinson's
fielder's choice. Erica
Armenta then walked to load the bases with nobody out before
Crystal Russell hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating Kessler
give the Islanders a 2-1 advantage. It would be all the offense in the
inning for the Islanders as Robinson was out on third on a
fielder's choice by Stephanie Estrada and Andrea Simancas ended the
inning with a foul out to third base.
In the second
game, the Islanders tallied a season-high nine hits with Armenta
and Brenda Guerrero picking up two hits each.
Stephen F.
Austin's Benet Higgs opened the game with a double down the left
field line before Crystal Dahlquist hit a two-run blast to give the
Ladyjacks the early lead.
Dahlquist finished the game with three hits and five runs batted
in.
The Islanders
would answer with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead
in half when Gonzalez led off the inning with a single to
left. She would later move
to second on a sac bunt by Guerrero before moving to third when on
a gounder by Lauren Peters.
Neither team would
score again until SFA scored two more runs in the top of the fifth
on three hits.
A&M-Corpus Christi kept the game close with another run in the
bottom of the frame.
Guerrero led off the inning with a single through the right side
before Peters doubled to right center. Holly Kellogg, who pinch hit for
Robinson, singled through the left side to plate Guerrero.
A&M-Corpus
Christi tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on
two hits and took advantage of a Stephen F. Austin error. Margo Hurdt led off the inning
with a single while Guerrero hit an RBI single.
Neither team
scored in the seventh to take the game to extra innings where Jess
Tullos was placed on second due to the international tie-breaker
rules. She was moved to
third on a sac bunt by Bria Wilson and later scored on a sacrifice
fly to left by Bria Wilson.
The Islanders kept
the game alive with a run of their own in the bottom of the
frame. Estrada was placed
on second and would later move to third on a ground out by Guerrero
and then scored three pitches later on a passed ball.
The Ladyjacks
exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth on three hits,
including a two-run single by Dahlquist giving them a 9-5 win.
The Islanders will
finish out the tournament tomorrow afternoon with a game against
Baylor.
