FRISCO,
Texas Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok has
been named the Southland Conference Men's Scholar-Athlete of the
Year for the second straight year the league office has announced.
Lamar's Clerc Koenck was the women's winner.
Songok, who was
also the 2007 Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, posted a
3.33 grade point average while majoring in chemistry entering the
fall semester. He is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's
Honor Roll at A&M-Corpus Christi and was named Academic
All-American by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association in track (2007) and cross country (2006).
A native of
Kapsabet, Kenya, Songok has won the last two SLC cross country
individual titles, becoming the first repeat winner since Arkansas
State's Steve Wilson won back-to-back titles in 1980 and 1981. He
has also won two-straight NCAA South Regional titles, while placing
seventh at this year's NCAA Cross Country Championship to earn
All-America honors for the second-consecutive season. Songok, who
did not lose a race all year until the national meet, won the
national title in the 10,000 meter run last summer at the NCAA
Outdoor Championship.
Koenck posted a
3.77 GPA, while majoring in exercise science, as she was also named
to the 2007 U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Association
All-Academic team. A four-time member to the Dean's List at Lamar,
she has also been on the president's list one time.
A native of
Anacoco, La., Koenck was named the 2006 and 2007 SLC Cross Country
Athlete of the Year. This season, she won her second-straight SLC
championship with a time of 20:48.1.
