SONGOK NAMED CONFERENCE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE FOR SECOND TIME

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok has been named the Southland Conference Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight year the league office has announced. Lamar's Clerc Koenck was the women's winner.

Songok, who was also the 2007 Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, posted a 3.33 grade point average while majoring in chemistry entering the fall semester. He is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll at A&M-Corpus Christi and was named Academic All-American by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in track (2007) and cross country (2006).

A native of Kapsabet, Kenya, Songok has won the last two SLC cross country individual titles, becoming the first repeat winner since Arkansas State's Steve Wilson won back-to-back titles in 1980 and 1981. He has also won two-straight NCAA South Regional titles, while placing seventh at this year's NCAA Cross Country Championship to earn All-America honors for the second-consecutive season. Songok, who did not lose a race all year until the national meet, won the national title in the 10,000 meter run last summer at the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

Koenck posted a 3.77 GPA, while majoring in exercise science, as she was also named to the 2007 U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Association All-Academic team. A four-time member to the Dean's List at Lamar, she has also been on the president's list one time.

A native of Anacoco, La., Koenck was named the 2006 and 2007 SLC Cross Country Athlete of the Year. This season, she won her second-straight SLC championship with a time of 20:48.1.
