GREELEY, Colo.-
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team saved its best round
for last in the 2006 Independent Championship as the Islanders shot
a 311, moving up one spot to finish fourth in their final season as
an independent.
Jacklynn Miller shot back-to-back rounds of 76 to lead the
Islanders with a tie for sixth place finish. She was one of three
players to score better than 80 in the final round as Ashley
Olynick shot a 77 and Mary Betancourt shot a 78 in final round of
the season.
After scoring a combined total of 338 after the first round and not
having a player shoot under 80, the Islanders climbed up two spots
with a three-round total of 966, five strokes ahead of North Dakota
State.
UC Davis dominated the event, shooting a three-day total of 913, 34
strokes better than Northern Colorado, who finished second with a
total of 947. The Aggies had four of its five players shoot better
than 75 in the final round with Danielle Cvitanov pacing the team
with a 71 in the final round. She won the tournament with a
three-day total of 219, nine strokes better than second place
finisher Katie Avery of Northern Colorado.
Olynick finished 12th with a total of 240, while Betancourt was
tied for 18th with a 245.
South Dakota State finished third with a score of 960, while North
Dakota State was fifth with a 971.
