CORPUS CHRISTI Entering the game against
Huston-Tillotson, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders knew
the Rams would be turnover prone. They were not sure how many
times Huston-Tillotson would give up the ball, but A&M-Corpus
Christi was not expecting 51 turnovers by the visiting team in the
Islanders 85-44 win.
The
Islanders (2-5) benefited from the sloppy play, scoring 49 points
off turnovers, more than the Rams scored the entire game. Four
players scored in double-figures with Kirbria Lewis leading the way
with a game-tying 18 points, while Nicole Duncan added 17.
Jillianne Duffey recorded the games only double-double with 10
points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Huston-Tillotson started out the game with four-straight turnovers,
but hung around in the early going. The Rams were down just 10-8
with 12:44 to go after a pair of free throws by Bethany Roden.
A&M-Corpus Christi used a 14-4 run capped off with a free throw
by Lewis to give the Islanders a 28-16 lead with 5:53 to play in
the first. The onslaught would continue as the Islanders ended the
first half with a 7-3 run and led 42-25 at the break.
The
Rams had 24 turnovers in the first half, more than any Islander
opponent has had for an entire game this season.
A&M-Corpus Christi held the Rams to just 19 second-half points
and forced 27 turnovers in the second half.
The
Islanders used an 18-0 run late in the game to lead 77-41 with 4:40
to play. During that stretch, the Rams went nearly six minutes
without scoring a bucket. Ratisha Swearington scored the game's
final bucket on a layup with 56 seconds to play.
