Anna Machado and Kati Broom tallied a combined 29 kills to lead
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 3-1 win over Texas-Pan
American.
Despite dropping the first game 24-30, the Islanders came back to
win the next three games, 31-29, 30-26 and 30-24. Machado led
A&M-Corpus Christi with 16 kills, while Broom chipped in with
13.
The Broncs started off the match with a .348 hitting percentage in
the first game, knocking down 18 kills with just two errors, but
didn?t hit better than .176 the rest of the way. The Islanders hit
.226 for the match, including a .333 hitting percentage in the
deciding fourth game.
Freshman Ashley Thigpen tallied eight kills without an error in 11
total attacks for a hitting percentage of .727, which sets an
Islander record for hitting percentage in a four-game match. Senior
Lauren Carter had nine kills with just two errors in 30
attacks.
Defensively, libero Carol Marcengo led all players with 23 digs,
while Broom and Amber Pippen added 18 and 11 digs respectively.
Heather Bravo led all players with 23 kills for the Broncs, while
Deanna Schneyer and Stephanie Redd had 16 and 15 kills between
them.
The Islanders will head to Long Island, N.Y. for their final
tournament of the season when they compete in the Long Island
Invitational. They will face Northern Colorado, Long Island,
Florida Atlantic and Howard before returning home on Oct. 4 to host
Lamar in the Fieldhouse.
