SAN ANTONIO ? The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams
opened their 2005 seasons in impressive fashion Friday at the UTSA
Triangular Relays at Olmos Park with the team of Yvette Rodriguez
and Magaly Burciaga taking the top spot in the women?s race, and
the duo of Shadrack Songok and Kyle Flowers winning the men?s
race.
Rodriguez and Burciaga finished the three-mile course in a time of
34:35 downing teammates Tarryn DeBeer and Meghan Lemke by 31
seconds. DeBeer and Lemke finished second overall with a time of
35:06. Bertha Castillo and Hannah Maenius were the final team to
compete the course finishing sixth with a mark of 36:22.
On the men?s side, the duo of Songok and Flowers broke the meet
record as they covered the five-mile course in a time of 49:51.
Maurice Harford and Jose Corona placed fifth (51:47) with freshmen
Jeff Bowden and Sam Sanchez sixth (52:12). The pairings of Mark
Moralez /Blaine Gibson (54:17) and Felipe Romero/Alzander Staley
(55:55) were eighth and ninth, respectively.
?The girls ran very well as team and will get even stronger when
Anita (Quirino) returns,? said Islander head coach Shawn Flanagan.
?I believe some of the other women will pick it up as we go as
well.
?The team of Shadrack and Kyle was strong and J.R. Pulido ran well,
but his partner (Luis Garcia) had to drop out. I thought the other
freshman looked promising.?
The Islanders will be off until Sept 17 when they participate in
the Rice Invitational in Houston.
