ISLANDERS RUNNER TAKE TOP SPOTS AT OPENING MEET

SAN ANTONIO ? The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams opened their 2005 seasons in impressive fashion Friday at the UTSA Triangular Relays at Olmos Park with the team of Yvette Rodriguez and Magaly Burciaga taking the top spot in the women?s race, and the duo of Shadrack Songok and Kyle Flowers winning the men?s race.

Rodriguez and Burciaga finished the three-mile course in a time of 34:35 downing teammates Tarryn DeBeer and Meghan Lemke by 31 seconds. DeBeer and Lemke finished second overall with a time of 35:06. Bertha Castillo and Hannah Maenius were the final team to compete the course finishing sixth with a mark of 36:22.

On the men?s side, the duo of Songok and Flowers broke the meet record as they covered the five-mile course in a time of 49:51. Maurice Harford and Jose Corona placed fifth (51:47) with freshmen Jeff Bowden and Sam Sanchez sixth (52:12). The pairings of Mark Moralez /Blaine Gibson (54:17) and Felipe Romero/Alzander Staley (55:55) were eighth and ninth, respectively.

?The girls ran very well as team and will get even stronger when Anita (Quirino) returns,? said Islander head coach Shawn Flanagan. ?I believe some of the other women will pick it up as we go as well.

?The team of Shadrack and Kyle was strong and J.R. Pulido ran well, but his partner (Luis Garcia) had to drop out. I thought the other freshman looked promising.?

The Islanders will be off until Sept 17 when they participate in the Rice Invitational in Houston.
