SACRAMENTO ? Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman Shadrack
Songok finished ninth in the finals of the 5,000-meter run at the
NCAA Track and Field Championship at Sacramento State on Saturday
night.
Songok, the first Islander athlete to reach the finals at an NCAA
Championship, posted a time of 13:54.63 breaking his previous best
and the Islander school-record, which was 14:02.44. Stanford?s Ryan
Hall and Ian Dobson finished 1-2 with times of 13:22.32 and
13:22.54, respectively. Nick Willis of Michigan was third in
13:27.54.
He missed All-American honors by one just three seconds as the top
eight finishers received the honor. The native of Kenya was the
lone freshman in the finals of the 5,000-meter run.
?We had three goals coming in and we achieved two of them just
missing the third one by finishing ninth,? said Islander head coach
Shawn Flanagan. ?He was the only freshman in the final which says a
lot especially with how he had been limited in training. It also
bodes well for the direction of our program in general. This was a
tremendous experience all the way around.?
