The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women?s tennis team fell just
shy of repeating as the Independent Championship falling 4-3 in the
finals to Northern Colorado.
A&M-Corpus Christi was within two points of the title as the
match came down to No. 5 singles between Lauren Schmidt and the
Bears? Kellie Crail. Crail, however, came back from a set down to
win 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 in what proved to be the deciding point of the
match.
The Islanders won three singles matches as Carlota Santos downed
Karen Groll 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Carmen Abeaboeru
defeated Meredith Krystofik 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Corpus
Christi native Stephanie Canales also won for the Islanders at No.
6 with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Anna Alexander.
Northern Colorado claimed the doubles point by winning all three
matches. The duo of Carmen Vasos and Crail edged Lana Burton and
Schmidt 9-8 at No. 2 doubles.
The loss concludes the Islanders season. With a 2-1 record in the
tournament, TAMUCC concludes its spring campaign with a 7-9
mark.
