The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team tough
early schedule continues this weekend at the Miami Thanksgiving
Classic with games against third-ranked LSU and Nebraska of the Big
12 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both games begin at 11
a.m. (CST).
The Islanders enter the game 0-2 after falling to a pair of top 20
teams to open the season. A&M-Corpus Christi lost its opener
65-51 to 20th- ranked Vanderbilt and fell 92-64 to fifth-ranked
Baylor on Tuesday despite 31 points from Terra Andrews.
LSU, which finished 33-3 a season ago while reaching the Final
Four, is 2-0 entering the tournament prior to its game with
Nebraska on Friday. Seimone Augustus, who swept the awards as the
top women's player last season, leads the Tigers. She is averaging
21 points and 8.5 rebounds thus far, while center Sylvia Fowles
averages 17 points and 11 rebounds. The meeting will be the first
between the Tigers and the Islanders.
Nebraska is 1-1 coming into the tournament after going 18-14 a
season ago reaching the second round of the WNIT. The Cornhuskers
lost at home 68-49 to South Dakota State, who the Islanders face
twice later in the season, but rebounded to down Creighton 84-50.
Nebraksa is led by freshman Kelsey Griffin, who is averaging 18.5
and seven rebounds a game. A&M-Corpus Christi and Nebraska met
in Lincoln, Neb. during the 2001-02 with the Huskers winning
76-58.
The Islanders return home to face Texas-San Antonio on Tuesday on
Circle K Court at the American Bank Center. The game is slated to
begin at 7 p.m.
