Texas A&M-Corpus Christi setter Paula Araujo recorded the
team?s first triple-double of the year, but it wasn?t enough as
Utah Valley State outlasted the Islanders by taking a 3-2 win.
Araujo had a season-high 13 kills to go along with 17 digs, which
is also a season high. She finished off the triple-double by
picking up 33 assists.
The Wolverines won the opening point of the first game and lost
the lead just twice as they took the opener, 30-26. Utah Valley
State went up 5-3 after an Islander service error, then went on a
5-2 run to go up 10-5, its largest lead of the game.
The Islanders closed the gap to two after a hitting error by Cami
Manwell, to make the score 17-15. A&M-Corpus Christi would
eventually tie the game at 20 after Lauren Carter tallied one of
her 12 kills on the day. Carter was the most efficient Islander as
she had just two kills for a .333 hitting percentage.
Amber Pippen collected her only service ace on the night to give
the Islanders a 23-22 lead. The Wolverines picked up back-to-back
points before Anna Machado picked up a kill to give the Islanders a
26-25 lead. It would be the last point of the game for
A&M-Corpus Christi.
In the second game, the Islanders never trailed as they tied the
match with a 30-27 win. A&M-Corpus Christi led by as many as
eight in the second frame when Araujo put away a kill to give the
Islanders a 23-15 lead. The Wolverines pulled within four, using a
6-2 run fueled by two kills by Brooke Adams, who finished with a
match-high 18 kills.
Utah Valley State would come no closer as Pippen closed the game
out with one of her 16 kills on the night. Pippen?s double-digit
kill performance marks the second-straight match in which she has
notched over 10 kills in a match.
The Wolverines overpowered A&M-Corpus Christi in the third
game, taking a 30-19 win, never allowing the Islanders in the
match. TAMUCC tied the match at nine, but never took the lead as
UVSC 15-3 run to go up 27-15.
The Islanders tied the match at two games each by winning a game
that saw both teams exchange points before A&M-Corpus Christi
prevailed with a 31-29 win. Machado led off the match with a kill
to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead.
After a 6-3 run, TAMUCC led 12-7, its largest lead of the game.
After both teams exchanged points, the Islanders led 18-13 before
Utah Valley State went on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 20.
Neither team took more than a one point lead until a kill by
Pippen and a hitting error by Utah Valley State gave the Islanders
a 27-25 lead. The Wolverines managed to tie the game at 29 thanks
to a kill by Jessica Endres and a service ace by Stephanie
McFarland. Back-to-back attack errors by Camie Manwill gave the
Islanders the victory.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Islanders held the lead until
Manwill recorded a kill to tie the match at 10. The Wolverines
would not trail again as Manwill closed the match out with
two-straight kills.
A&M-Corpus Christi had four players finish with double-digit
kills, while setter Carol Marcengo broke the school record for digs
in a five-game match with 27. The Islanders moved to 9-12 with the
loss.
