CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman Mary
Carmen Betancourt shot a field-best 71 in the second round and
combined for a two-round total of 150 to give the Islanders a fifth
place standing after the first day of the Adidas Lady Aztec
Invitational.
Jacklynn Miller and Whitney Stromgren shot a team-best 77 in the
first round, while Betancourt finished with a 79 after the first 18
holes. The Islanders finished with a team total of 620 after the
first day, 15 strokes off of San Diego State, who leads the 13-team
field by two strokes over Sacramento State.
Betancourt is currently in a tie for ninth place with a total of
150 and has placed in the top five in both tournaments she has
played in this season. Miller and Stromgen both shot a 77 in
consecutive rounds and sit in a tie for 22nd place, while Ashley
Olynick shot back-to-back 81?s for a total of 162, good enough for
a tie for 41st.
Sacramento State?s Margaux Sheehan shot a 68 in the first round
and a 75 in the second for a total of 143 to lead the event. Ali
Carter of Northern Arizona is one shot behind after shooting a 72
in consecutive rounds.
The field will play the third and final round tomorrow with a
shotgun start scheduled for 8 a.m.
