MEN'S TENNIS WINS SLC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

5-2-04

SAN ANTONIO - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men?s tennis team showed why they came in as the No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference Men?s Tennis Tournament, breezing through the field without losing a point in its two matches.

The Islanders defeated Texas-Arlington in the championship match, 4-0, its second sweep in as many days, as they defeated host UTSA yesterday by the same score.

Texas-Arlington has reigned supreme in the SLC prior to this season, winning six titles, including five in a row. The Islanders staked their claim on the conference in just its first year of existence. Even more impressive, the Islanders lost just five of a possible 49 points throughout regular season and conference tournament play. The only points they lost was when they defeated Lamar, 5-2, then Texas-Arlington, 4-3. They swept the rest of the field in the Southland Conference.

In today?s win, the Islanders took the early point by winning two of three doubles matches. No. 1 seeds Jeremy Blandin and Luis Moris defeated David Corrie and Nathan McGregor, 8-3, while No. 2 seeds Goncalo Figueiredo and Oscar Roman beat Ian Vasquez and Niels Buksik by the same score.

The Mavericks? No. 3 seed took the last doubles match after the Islanders already had the deciding point.

In singles play, TAMUCC?s Figueiredo, Javier Bacaicoa and Oscar Roman each took straight-set victories to seal the match and the championship for the Islanders. Figueiredo defeated McGregor, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 seed, while Bacaicoa took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Buksik at the No. 4 spot, and Roman defeated Petri Van Renensburg at the No. 6 seed, 6-2, 6-4.

The Islanders will now wait on the NCAA to see if they received a bid to play in the 64-team NCAA Tournament. The Southland Conference currently does not have an automatic bid and head coach Steve Denton said he would not know until tomorrow if his team will receive a invite from the NCAA.
