CORPUS CHRISTI ? Left fielder Rachel Kitchens (Sr., Orange, Calif.)
extended her hitting streak to four games, but the Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi softball team (9-14) dropped an 11-3
decision to visiting Stephen F. Austin (6-10) in the Bash at the
Bay opener at Islander Field this morning.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, third baseman
Katie Evans (Sr., Tempe, Ariz.) led off with a walk, and catcher
Jennifer Golden (Fr., Conyers, Ga.) followed by roping a double to
the right-centerfield gap. Right fielder Christy Cortez?s (Jr.,
Portland) base hit to left plated Evans from third, and Shana
Washington (Fr., Houston) drove a one-out sacrifice fly to
centerfield to score pinch-runner Brenda Guerrero (Fr., Houston),
trimming the deficit to 5-2. The Islanders added a third run on a
throwing error by SFA third baseman Ragen Rutherford.
Stephen F. Austin threatened to extend their lead with one out in
the top of the fifth, but Rutherford was throw out at the plate by
Islander first baseman Lindsey Maxey (Jr., Shiner). The Ladyjacks
added two more runs, when SFA first baseman Chelsea Lundburg
cracked a two-run single up the middle, and scored four more times
in the top of the sixth inning.
SFA had five hits and capitalized on five Islander errors to jump
out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. All five runs were
unearned.
The Islanders seven hits are the most by the team since pounding
out 12 against Boston University on February 21. The Ladyjacks
managed 11 runs on 13 hits.
Maxey and Cortez each went two-for-three, with Cortez hitting a
double in the second inning. SFA shortstop Lee Lara went
four-for-four at the plate, with three runs and four runs batted
in.
The Islanders will face Bowling Green State in the next game in the
Bash by the Bay, while the Ladyjacks will play BGSU at 1:00
p.m.
