ROCK HILL, S.C. - Sarah Pauly struck out 11 Ohio State batters
in the championship game of the Winthrop Tournament to lead her
team to a 3-0 victory.
Pauly was named the tournament?s MVP, striking out a total of 64
batters in five appearances, giving up just two runs in 34.2 inning
pitched. Freshman shortstop Megan Hansen was named to the
all-tournament team as she hit two homeruns, both of which came in
the same game, and had five RBI over six games.
What used to be a hot commodity for them, the Islanders had no
trouble scoring runs, totaling 42 runs through the course of the
tournament while shutting out East Tennessee State and Ohio State
in the semifinal and championship games.
The Islanders caused all the damage they would need in the top of
the first inning against Ohio State, scoring two runs off two hits,
while taking advantage of a Buckeye error to take the early lead.
Freshman Erica Armenta led off the game with a single, then later
stole second and third base. She would come around to score off of
an error by Kristi DeVries.
Hansen doubled to right-center, then pitcher Jamee Juarez had
trouble finding the strike zone, walking three straight batters,
scoring Hansen from third off the walk.
The Islanders would score one more insurance run in the top of the
sixth inning off of a Christy Cortez single that drove in Michelle
Castellano, who reached on a single.
The Islanders have now won seven straight games and improved to
17-16 overall and will start Big South Conference play on Tuesday
afternoon with a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina at 3
p.m.
