The Islander bats finally came alive, collecting a combined 23
hits in two games as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi swept Northern
Colorado in a pair of seven inning games.
The Islanders took the first game, 10-3, scoring in five of seven
innings to hand the bears their second loss of the season.
Charles Carter singled in Jaime Landin, who reached on a single to
center field to open the scoring for the Islanders. The South
Texans would explode for four more runs in the bottom of the third
inning to all but seal the first-game victory. In the inning, the
Islanders collected two hits and took advantage of a Northern
Colorado error to take a 5-0 lead.
Second baseman Casey Buaas was hit by a pitch to start the inning
and would later steal second. Landin reached on a walk before
Carter singled to center to drive in Landin. Catcher Jose Rodriguez
drove in Mike Schlekewy on a sacrifice fly to left field before
James Garner doubled to left field driving Carter.
Northern Colorado scored all three of their runs in the top of the
fifth inning, but would come no closer. The Bears collected five
hits, all singles in the inning, but would not threaten again.
The Islanders scored three more runs of their own in the bottom of
the inning and would score two more in the bottom of the sixth
inning to finish off the scoring. In the bottom of the sixth,
Landin hit his second homerun of the game over the left field fence
as one of the team?s three hits on the inning.
Islander pitcher Trey Hearne pitched a complete game, five hitter,
striking out 10 while walking just one in picking up his first win
of the season.
In the second game, the Islanders scored in all but one inning to
complete the sweep, moving their record to 6-6 on the season.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored six runs in the first three
innings, including three in the opening frame. The Islanders
collected seven extra-base hits including two homeruns. Rodriguez
picked up two doubles on the game, while Hearne and Schlekewy
homered.
Landin finished the day going four for seven with a homer and a
double with two runs batted in while scoring three runs. Carter had
an equally impressive day, going four for four in the first game
with two runs batted in. Third baseman Jeremy Balke picked up thee
hits in three trips to the plate.
The Islanders scored at least two runs in three frames, including
two three-run innings.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi game two starter, Mike Garcia, pitched
a complete game, eight hitter to move to 2-0 on the year, Garcia
struck out 12 batters while walking just one.
The same two teams will finish their four game series tomorrow at
Islander field at Noon.
