LUBBOCK - Jeremy Blandin was the only Islander
to advance to the final round of the qualifying tournament,
defeating his teammate, David Plasencia, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Four Islanders advanced to play in today?s round, but all but
Blandin fell in straight sets. Goncalo Figueirdo fell to No. 1 seed
Ryan Newport, 6-3, 6-1, while Andrey Kumantsov lost to Matija Zgaga
of Slovakia, 6-4, 7-5.
Blandin will take on No. 3 seed Hamid Mirzadeh of Europe at 10
a.m. tomorrow morning. Mirzadeh currently plays for the University
of Florida and the winner of the match will qualify to play in the
Men?s Futures Tournament to be held on Tuesday.
?The guys played really well today. I was really pleased with the
match between Jeremy (Blandin) and David (Plasencia). It was really
competitive and it shows we are pretty well rounded from our top
player to our No. 6 player,? head coach Steve Denton said.
