CHICAGO, ILL. ?Thomas Bailey poured in a career-high 27 points,
connecting on all four of his three-point attempts, but the Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi men?s basketball team (9-7) dropped an 89-81
decision to Chicago State (5-14) tonight at the Jacoby D. Dickens
Center. The victory extends the Cougars?s winning streak to four
games.
The Islanders set a new team-high with 28 assists in the game. The
previous high was 26, set against Albany on January 15, 2001.
Trailing 45-33 with about 17 minutes remaining in the game, Corey
Stokes? (Jr., East Chicago, Ind.) three-point play, followed by his
jumper from the wing ignited a 16-5 Islander run, capped by Brian
Evans (Sr., Dallas, Texas) lay-up on the fastbreak to trim the
deficit to 50-49. CSU responded with a 9-2 run, capped by a Royce
Parran three-pointer to stretch their lead to 59-52, with 9:25
remaining.

Josh Ervin (Fr., Houston, Texas) drained a three-pointer to spark a
9-2 run, cutting the deficit to 71-68 with 3:30 left in the game.
The Cougars extended their lead to 11 points with just 58 seconds
remaining, but a Nick Jackson (Jr., Houston, Texas) offensive
rebound-and-putback sparked a final 8-1 run, pulling the Islanders
to within 85-81 with 21.4 seconds left on the clock. A pair of
dunks by Tony Weeden and Rubeen Perry put the game out of reach,
however.
Neither team could gain the momentum early on, as the teams
exchanged the lead four times over the opening 6:25 of the game.
The Islanders took their final lead of the opening half, 10-9, with
13:35 remaining on a Thomas Bailey (Sr., San Antonio, Texas)
jumper. The Cougars answered with an 11-2 run, capped by Parran?s
three-pointer with just over nine minutes remaining in the
half.
Travis Bailey (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) scored five straight
points, followed by a Stokes putback of an offensive rebound to
pull TAMU-CC to within 20-19 with 7:22 remaining in the period.
CSU regained control using a 19-6 run to seize a 39-25 lead with
just 13 seconds left. Thomas Bailey?s rebound and tip-in at the end
of the half sent the teams to the locker room with Chicago State
leading, 39-27. A&M-Corpus Christi out rebounded the Cougars
19-14 in the opening period, snaring 11 offensive boards, but were
out shot 60-35.5 percent from the field.
The Islanders out rebounded the CSU 37-28, including a decisive
19-7 edge on the offensive glass. Chicago State shot 56.3 percent
from the field, while allowing TAMU-CC to convert on 47.9 percent
of their attempts. A&M-CC shot 57.5 percent in the second half.
The Cougars outshot the Islanders from three-point range 50-26.1
percent.
Travis Bailey registered 15 points and two steals, while Lamkin had
11 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Jackson finished with
five rebounds. Craig Franklin paced Chicago State with 22 points,
connecting on nine of his 11 free throws. Parran and Perry scored
19 points apiece, connecting on nine-of-nine and seven of nine free
throw attempts respectively.
