CORPUS CHRISTI, TX ? Seth Engelken (Fr. St. Josephs, Mo.) recorded
the first double-double of his career to lift the Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi men?s basketball team (8-6) to a 77-67 win
over visiting Texas Southern (6-7) tonight at Memorial Coliseum.
Engelken finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and
three steals.
Brian Evans (Sr., Dallas, Texas) scored the first five points of
the game as the Islanders took the tip-off and started the contest
with a 15-4 run. TAMU-CC led by as many as 13 in the first half and
never trailed, but the Tigers used a late 10-2 run to narrow the
margin to five points, 21-16 with 7:08 left in the period. The
Islanders held a 37-25 edge at halftime.
With TAMU-CC holding a 41-32 advantage less than five minutes into
the second half, Texas Southern used a 6-0 run to close the gap to
three points, 41-38, but could come no closer as the Islanders
pulled away for the win.
The Islanders launched a season-high 70 field goal attempts,
connecting on 25, while TSU connected on 24 of 59 attempts. The
Islanders connected on 75.9 percent of their free throws, while
Texas Southern shot 64 percent from the charity stripe.
Evans poured in 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Travis
Bailey (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) registered 16 points, five
rebounds, and three steals. Allen Lovett led TSU with 21
points.
Evans remains one steal away from tying the Islander career mark,
while Corey Lamkin (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) is just one offensive
rebound from the career record.
The Islanders return to action on Saturday, when they travel to
IPFW. Tip-off will be at 7:05.
