BATON ROUGE, LA. --- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fired a final
round 309 to end its season with a ninth place effort at the
LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic, Sunday afternoon.
Starting the day in a tie for ninth, the Islanders shaved two
strokes off their second round score and held off Western Carolina
and Augusta State by one shot for the top 10 effort. A&M-CC?s
three-round score of 936 was an eight shot improvement over last
year?s performance at the same event.
The Islanders had three sub 80 efforts on the day. Alessandra
Perez (Punta de Mata, Venezuela) cut nine shots off her second
round to finish with a 74. Ashlie Simmons (Big Spring, Tex.) fired
her second 76 of the tournament, while Liza Mucheru (Nairobi,
Kenya) posted a final round 79 in her final collegiate round.
Melissa Mason (Harlingen, Tex.), the second senior on the squad,
finished with an 80 as did freshman Whitney Stromgren (Topeka,
Kan.).
Overall, Simmons tallied her fourth top-10 effort of the season
with a three-round 223, which placed her in ninth. Perez made a
move up the standing in the final day, finishing in a tie for 34th
at 234, while Mason placed in a tie for 44th at 237. Mucheru and
Stromgren were 62nd and 70th respectively at 242 and 250.
With her score of 223, Simmons concludes the season with a school
record for scoring average in a single year. She averaged 75.2
shots per round, breaking the former mark of 78.9 by former
Islander Melissa Newman-Gillespie.
UNC Wilmington (889) held off Tulane (892) and won the team title
by three shots over the Green Wave. Memphis shot up into a third
place finish at 907, overtaking the host LSU.
The individual title was also won by UNCW. Amelie Farrah (217)
shot a final round 72 to win individual honors by one shot over
Carolin Landmann (218) of Tulane. UNCW?s Becky Berzonski (219)
finished third, two shots behind her teammate.
