CORPUS CHRISTI, TEX. --- Josh Hulin (Odessa,
Tex.) drove home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th to
lift Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory
over archrival UT-Pan American, Sunday. The victory completes a
three-game series sweep over the Broncs.
Mike Schlekewy (Calgary, Alberta) greeted Pan American reliever
Johnny Gibson with a leadoff triple to right center field. The
Broncs then intentionally walked Humberto Aguilar (Odessa, Tex.)
and Blair Bourque (Taunton, Mass.) to load the bases for Hulin. The
junior belted a single to deep left to plate Schlekewy from
third.
Jorge Huerta (Houston, Tex.) pitched three innings of two-hit ball
to up his record to 3-1, while Gibson was tagged with the defeat at
fell to 5-4.
It was a pitchers duel right from the start between a pair of
seniors - A&M-CC's Jimmy Hamon (Pasadena, Tex.) and UTPA's
Travis Parker. Hamon, who exited after nine innings with 11
strikeouts, scattered six hits and gave up only one earned run in
his outing. Parker exited after getting out of a bases loaded jam
in the 10th. He gave up nine hits and two earned runs.
The Broncs, now 17-19, got their two runs in the fifth inning.
Louie Alamia broke the 0-0 deadlock with a run scoring single,
which scored T.J. Gilmer. Alamia came around on the next play on a
single by Marco Garza and a two-base error.
A&M-CC countered with one run in the bottom of the sixth on a
double by Hector Garanzuay (Brownsville, Tex.) that scored Jaime
Landin (Brownsville, Tex.) from first.
The Islanders knotted the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Hulin opened with a double to left center. With one out, James
Garner (Corpus Christi, Tex.) ripped a double down the third
baseline to tie the game at 2-2.
A&M-CC tallied 11 hits in the 3-hour marathon. Garanzuay went 3
for 5, while Aguilar and Hulin each registered two hits in the
victory.
In the victory, the Islanders extended their home field-winning
streak to 15 games. Aguilar and Landin also kept intact their
modest hitting streaks of 21 and 18-games respectively.
A&M-CC, now 21-12 on the year, return to action, Wednesday
afternoon as it hosts UT-San Antonio in a doubleheader beginning at
2 p.m.
