CORPUS CHRISTI, TEX. ? Texas A&M-Corpus Christi?s Mandie
Vinck (Chula Vista, Calif.), Kristin Rogers (Sand Springs, Okla.),
and Terra Andrews (Missouri City, Tex.) represent the Islanders on
the 2002-03 all-Independent teams, while head coach Jodi Kest was
honored as Co-Coach of the Year, it was announced Thursday. The
head coaches of all Independent schools and their respective media
contacts made the selections.
Vinck garnered the 2002-03 Defensive Player of the Year after a
stellar season which saw her rank among the national leaders in
both steals and assists. The senior finished off her career by
posting 8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 3.3 steals per game
en route to being tabbed a first team selection in addition to the
Defensive Player of the Year honor. Vinck finished the season
ranked 11th in the country in assists and 17th in steals per game.
She finished the season with three double doubles in points and
assists and her 16-assist evening against IPFW was tied for the
fourth highest total in the Division I ranks.
Rogers, a repeat first team honoree, finished up her career
recording 15.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals per
contest. During her senior campaign, she collected seven games of
20 or more points, including a career-high 27-point effort at UT-El
Paso. Rogers was named to the all-tournament teams at the Flint
Hills Resources Islander Classic and at the Fun & Sun Classic
in Miami.
Joining Vinck and Rogers on the first team were Lindsay Boyett
(Birmingham Southern), Alex Gravel (UT-Pan American), and Alexis
Pettway (Centenary)
Andrews was named to the second team in her first season with the
Islanders. The freshman averaged 12.1 points, 5.9 boards, 1.3
assists, 1.3 steals in 29.4 minutes per game en route to
establishing new freshman marks in seven categories, including
points (327), and rebounds (158). She was the team leader in
rebounds and second in scoring and field goal percentage (.469) on
the year. Andrews finished the 2002-03 campaign with 25-point,
10-rebound effort against Lipscomb.
?I am extremely happy and proud for Mandie, Kristin, and Terra,?
said Kest. ?I think it is a wonderful way for Mandie and Kristin to
close out their collegiate careers, while a perfect way for Terra
to begin hers.
?I admit that I am a little biased towards Terra, but I believe
that the season she turned in was well-deserving of freshman of the
year honors,? she continued. ?In my opinion she had one of the
better freshman campaigns in the nation.?
Second team honorees also include Courtney Boynton
(Lipscomb/Hendersonville, Tenn.), Sheena Carpenter (Morris Brown),
Julie Danieles (Centenary) and Amy Geralds (IPFW)
Kest received Co-Coach of the Year honors in her first season at
the helm of the Islander program. She guided the Islanders to their
fourth-consecutive winning season, despite losing the services of
two starters. A&M-CC finished with a 15-12 mark including first
ever wins over SMU and North Texas. The Islanders were 7-1 against
Independent schools.
Kest shares the honor with Birmingham-Southern?s Janine Hoffman,
who guided the Lady Panthers to a 16-10 mark.
Boyett was selected as the Player of the Year after posting 14.1
points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists for the Lady Panthers this
season. Carpenter was recognized as the Freshman of the Year after
averaging 13.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game for the
Wolverines. Maggie Bruening (IPFW) was the recipient of the
Newcomer of the Year after a 9.3 -point, 4.7 rebound-average her
junior campaign.
